A method of file compression, similar to ZIP. However, the RAR format can split big archives over a number of files, ending them with ".r01", ".r02" etc. Broadly speaking, the ".rar" file stores the index for the rest of the files, which contain any extra data. Depending on how the archive was made, you may need to download ALL the files to get at any of the data.
